MATLAB

MATLAB

I understand that, college has asked you learn about MATLAB. There is a lot about it on the net. You could simply search and get to it.

Anyway, I will give a small introduction about it.

It is a high level language and an interactive environment to perform highly computational tasks faster than C++ and Fortran for scientific computing. MATLAB is short for Matrix Laboratory. There are several commands to perform matrices, integration , differential equations etc. in this language.
It is used in a wide range of applications like signal processing, image processing, communication, for space craft design, car manufacturing, financial prediction etc.

This is being accepted by engineering and scientific community all over the word. It has also become apart of the curriculam of a large number engineering colleges all over the world.

By installing this software in the computer (Student educational verions are available for downlaod) and learning simple commands we can model or plot the graphs of function and equations.

Key Features

  • High-level language for technical computing
  • Development environment for managing code, files, and data
  • Interactive tools for iterative exploration, design, and problem solving
  • Mathematical functions for linear algebra, statistics, Fourier analysis, filtering, optimization, and numerical integration
  • 2-D and 3-D graphics functions for visualizing data
  • Tools for building custom graphical user interfaces
  • Functions for integrating MATLAB based algorithms with external applications and languages, such as C, C++, Fortran, Java, COM, and Microsoft Excel

There is Free version similar to MATLAB known as Freemat (Open License) available in the net.

There are numerous Tutorials available. Some links are given below.

To create FTP Site on your Web Site.

During installation of IIS select FTP server. FTP will use port 21 by default. Make sure you have enabled port forwarding in the Router for FTP port 21. You have to switch off windows firewall also.

You can copy all folders you want to make available on the FTP site to ftproot folder on the Inetpub directory of the IIS computer.

You can access the site by typing ftp://IPaddress in the browser. Permission can be set in teh IIS server.

Puting a Webcam on the Internet

Putting a Webcam on the Internet

I have downloaded WebcamXP trial software to try this. Installed the software, configured the webcamxp server.

Portforwarding has to be done. This was done by configuring router. In the virtual server, a rule was created for forwarding port 80. Only one server can be enabled for one IP and in all the NAT network.

External IP with port number should be entered to get to the Webcam from Internet. This is can be used to monitor Home or office when nobody is present. Sound can be also monitored. Very good software. I would like to write my own to do this !!!

Hosting a Website at Home.

Hosting a Website at Home.

I have been using free websites available on the site including this BLOGSPOT to experiment with hosting Websites. As I am connected to Web by DSL router, it is possible now.

There a many important information to handle this. First thing is that your external IP will vary with every disconnection of the Router from the ISP. As there is no Name Registeration, you must be dealing with IP addresses only. You can get a Name on trail basis by registering with NO-IP.COM, if you are inclined to so or register a name!!!

Then you must make sure, the Port you are using is not blocked by the either your router or ISP. You can use a Port scanner to check this. You can do this after going to yougetsignal.com.

After this you must configure Port forwarding in the Router. By default it is disabled to protect the NAT (Internal network).

This can be done by reading the Manual of the Router. In my D-Link Router, it is done in the Advanced tab, Virtual Server and adding Webserver to the applied rules for my NAT IP.

When this is done, you can goto another computer on the Internet and enter http:\\IPADDRESS:80 (Your external IP of the Router) to get your Webpage.

I forgot to mention one important thing. You must have IIS installed on your computer and WEBSITE is published on its Website ( normally on inetpub\wwwroot).
I used Frontpage for this experiment.

Lot of information about his is available on portforwarding.com

My Car

My Car

I have purchased a second hand car. I have dumped my old Toyota car. This time, it is a American Caprice classic (1996) with Auto transmission. I am using this opportunity to learn about Auto transmission. It is a very interesting blend of Hydraulics, Computers and mechanical engineering.
There is alot read about this marvel. Though it is an old car, it is still interesting and very comfortable to drive. I hope it will give me a good few years of service.

Antimatter Energy

Research is going in Antimatters. This is going to be the future Energy source. Though the research is only in the beginning stages, great potential is envisaged in this technolgy. It is the answer to all the energy problems of the world. We can get pure clean energy from this source. But the cost to make Antimatter is enormous at this stage. CERN is Europe is the main research center for this. It may not become feasible very soon. BUt we cannot predict what will happen in the future.

Standard Resistor Values

Standard Resistor values

Standard base resistor values are given in the following tables for the most commonly used tolerances (1%, 5%, 10%), along with typically available resistance ranges. To determine values other than the base, multiply the base value by 10, 100, 1 000 or 10 000.

Example:
Calculations indicate the need for a 355 kW resistor and a tolerance of 1% .

Look in the 1% table and select the 35.7 value (the nearest available standard value). Multiply by 10 000 to convert to 357 kW.
1% Standard ValuesDecade multiples are available from 10.0 W through 1.00 MW(also 1.10 MW, 1.20 MW, 1.30 MW, 1.50 MW, 1.60 MW, 1.80 MW, 2.00 MW and 2.20 MW)

Telephones (DTMF)

All the new Telephones now uses Dual-tone multi-frequency for Dialing. Gone are the days of Pulse Dialing. Pulse Dialing used Rotary dialing. A switch was made to open and close to make numbers of pulses depending upon the number dialled. It was producing a almost and square wave forms.

With advances in the PABX and Digital technolgy Touch tone Dailing has become the order of the day. Click on the link below to know about dual-tone frequencies.
